Dolly Parton’s Instagram Posted First Posthumous Message — and the Song Behind It Makes It Even More Meaningful

Even Her Future Without Her Still Sounded Like Dolly

Days before her death, Dolly told People that her team was exploring avatar performances following the cancellation of her Las Vegas residency amid health concerns.

Dolly explained that she could no longer deliver shows at the standard her fans deserved and would not tour as she once had. Still, she hoped technology might help create a major Nashville production, and even while discussing that painful limitation, her glorious sense of humor remained intact.

“I’ll be like George Jones — they used to call him ‘No Show Jones’ — I won’t have to show up in person but I still get paid!” she joked. “Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.”

That was unmistakably Dolly. Even disappointment could not keep her from finding a reason to laugh, while the future remained something she intended to fill with possibilities.

Her first posthumous message did not ask fans to pretend the loss did not hurt. It simply reached back to the morning when she first felt free, placed a butterfly beside her name, and reminded everyone she loved that the light was still coming.
