It started out as a typical warm summer afternoon in Missouri. Four local teenagers were hanging out near the creek, relaxing and swimming after a long week. But in a split second, a peaceful day turned into a race against time.
A 5-year-old little girl, who was playing near the bank under her family’s watchful eye, slipped and fell into the water. Heavy rain from the previous night had turned the usually calm creek into a fast-moving, dangerous torrent. Within seconds, the strong current pulled her into the deeper, flooded sections, out of reach from the shore.
Panic broke out as her mother realized what was happening. Hearing the frantic cries for help, the four boys didn’t hesitate for a single second. Without thinking twice about the strong currents or the danger to themselves, all four leaped into the murky, rushing water.
