The Unfinished Chapter of Lance Corporal Alvin Cullins

Upon completing his training, Alvin was assigned as a mortarman (MOS 0341)—a specialized combat role responsible for operating heavy, crew-served infantry mortars designed to provide critical fire support during ground engagements. He was deployed to the Republic of Vietnam, joining Mike Company, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.

His destination was Quang Tri Province, located in the northernmost sector of South Vietnam, directly adjacent to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). By 1967, Quang Tri had earned a reputation as one of the most treacherous and heavily contested battlegrounds of the entire war. The terrain was relentless: dense jungle foliage, rugged mountain ridges, suffocating humidity, and torrential monsoon rains that turned dusty trails into thick, red mud.

In this environment, every patrol was an exercise in extreme vigilance. As a mortarman, Alvin’s duty required immense physical stamina. In addition to his personal weapon, ammunition, and survival gear, he shared the burden of carrying the heavy component parts of the mortar system—the barrel, baseplate, and bipod—alongside heavy artillery rounds through dense, tangled bush under a blistering sun.
