Harrison looked from one little boy to the next as if reality itself had stopped making sense.
The oldest tightened his grip on my hand.
“Mom?” he whispered. “Who is that man?”
I swallowed before answering.
“Someone I used to know.”
Harrison finally found his voice.
“How old are they?”
I didn’t answer.
His jaw tightened.
“Chloe.”
“Five.”
The single word hit him harder than any accusation ever could.
Five.
Exactly the number of years since our divorce.
His eyes widened as he silently counted backward.
“No…” he muttered.
The youngest boy hid behind my leg while the middle child stared curiously at the stranger whose face looked strangely familiar.
A chauffeur stepped forward from the Bentley.
“Mrs. Vance, everything is ready. Mr. Whitmore is waiting at the estate.”
I nodded.
“Thank you, Daniel.”
Harrison immediately caught the name.
“Whitmore?”
His expression changed again.
Everyone in business knew the Whitmore family. They owned one of the largest environmental investment groups in North America.
The chauffeur opened the rear door.
The boys climbed inside one by one.
Before I followed them, Harrison stepped into my path.
“Tell me they’re not…”
“They’re tired,” I said quietly. “Please move.”
“Are they mine?”
The question hung between us.
Airport traffic continued moving around us while horns sounded in the distance.
For a moment, I almost pitied him.
Almost.
“You decided five years ago that you already knew every answer.”
His face lost what little color remained.
“You’re avoiding the question.”
“No.”
I looked directly into his eyes.
“I’m reminding you what happened when I tried answering your questions the first time.”
His shoulders stiffened.
Memory finally caught up with him.
The penthouse.
The shouting.
The divorce papers.
Every sentence he had refused to hear.
“I…”
“You didn’t listen.”
I stepped around him.
“You listened to lawyers.”
