My wife finally gave birth to the baby we had prayed for after six miscarriages — 18 years later, my daughter grabbed my hand and whispered, “Dad, you have no idea what Mom did.”

Part 2 ⬇️

I looked down at what Ronnie had pressed into my hands.

It was a document.

Old, folded at the edges, but the words were still clear.

An adoption certificate.

My name wasn’t on it.

“Ronnie—” I started.

“She adopted me without you,” Ronnie said, her voice breaking.

“You didn’t sign anything.

You didn’t even know, did you?”

I couldn’t speak.

Claire stepped off the porch, her hands out.

“Please.

Let me explain.

It wasn’t like that.”

“Then what was it like, Mom?” Ronnie’s voice cracked.

“Because it says right there — you signed alone.

Dad’s name is blank.”

Claire’s face crumpled.

“I was protecting you.

Both of you.”

“From what?” I finally said.

My voice didn’t sound like mine.

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then a car pulled into the driveway — someone none of us had invited.

Claire saw the driver and went completely white.

“No,” she whispered.

“Not today.

Not now.”

Ronnie grabbed my arm.

“Dad…

that’s the man whose name IS on the original document.”
