My teacher held up the photograph of my mother beside an F-22 and told the class, “Let’s keep our heroes believable.”

He stood.

The entire auditorium fell silent.

Then Admiral Carter walked to the microphone and looked directly at me.

“Lucas Miller,” he said, “would you please stand?”

Every student turned.

My legs felt unsteady, but I rose.

The admiral’s eyes shifted toward the back of the auditorium.

“And would Lieutenant Colonel Rachel Miller please join her son onstage?”

The double doors opened.

My mother stood there in her dark blue Air Force uniform, holding a sealed folder beneath one arm.

The students who had mocked me stopped breathing.

Mr. Reynolds went pale.

But the admiral was not looking at Mom’s uniform. He was looking at the folder.

“Colonel,” he said quietly, “I believe everyone here should hear what is inside that file.”

Mom walked toward the stage, placed the folder beside the microphone, and broke the seal.

Mom removed a single document from the folder, but Mr. Reynolds stepped forward before she could read it.
