Part 5 – The Secret Behind the Money
Inside were bank statements, transfer records, copies of messages, and notes arranged by date. The payments led to Bella Carter, a woman twenty-six years old who lived two towns away.
Bella was Kevin’s daughter from an earlier relationship. Her mother had raised her alone and had died several years before. Kevin had contacted Bella afterward and begun sending money, presenting himself as a father trying to repair the past.
There was only one problem: the money was not his.
He had taken it from Sarah’s education trust.
“Bella did not know,” Sarah said quickly. “She believed he was helping her from his salary. When I first found her, I was furious. I thought she had helped him steal from me. Then she showed me their messages. He had lied to both of us.”
The two young women who should have met as sisters had first encountered each other as casualties of the same deception. Once they compared records, the pattern became clear. Kevin had used Sarah’s inheritance to win Bella’s gratitude while controlling Sarah and me with the money he claimed was his.
Bella was expecting a baby when Sarah found her. Near the end of the pregnancy, her health became fragile, and after Pauline was born, she needed time and medical care to recover. The baby’s father was no longer part of Bella’s life, and there were no close relatives nearby.
So Sarah stayed.
