If she wanted a snack, she’d ask whether it was “too expensive.”
If I offered to buy her something she liked, she’d sometimes say, “It’s okay. I don’t really need it.”
I’d always praised her.
“You’re so mature.”
“You’re so considerate.”
“You think about other people.”
Now I wondered whether I’d misunderstood her completely.
Denise continued.
“Her cabinmates actually created a rule.”
“A rule?”
“They call it the Mia Rule.”
Nobody was allowed to give away a turn until they had taken their own turn first.
I almost laughed.
But Denise was serious.
“They’ve been protecting her from herself.”
