He also planned to donate some money to the shelter that had helped locate him.
“Leonard would probably find that funny,” Malcolm said.
“Why?” Ethan asked.
“He used to tell me I needed to learn how to accept help.”
Malcolm looked down.
“Took me 11 years to realize he was right.”
Before we left, Ethan hugged him again.
Malcolm made us promise to visit.
We promised.
On the drive home, Ethan held the gold bar in its case on his lap.
He barely spoke.
Finally, I asked, “What are you thinking?”
He looked out the window. “That this is weird.”
I laughed. “That is a very reasonable conclusion.”
Then he looked at me. “Can I still get the guitar?”
“Yes.”
“With this?”
“We’ll sell it properly, yes.”
“How much will be left?”
“A lot.”
We eventually sold the bar through a reputable dealer after verifying all the paperwork.
Ethan bought his guitar.
A better one than the original, though I refused to let him go overboard with it.
Most of the money went into savings for him.
A few months later, Malcolm came over for dinner.
He brought Buddy.
Ethan played three songs on his guitar.
Two were recognizable.
One was… ambitious.
Malcolm clapped louder than anyone.
At one point, I looked around my living room and thought about how close we had come to simply walking past him.
How easily Ethan could have picked up those dropped bills and kept moving.
Instead, he sat down, listened, and gave.
And somehow, on the exact day Malcolm needed a little help getting to the next chapter of his life, a 12-year-old boy with a guitar fund gave him enough to reach it.
The gold bar was extraordinary. But it wasn’t the part I kept thinking about.
The part I kept thinking about was what Malcolm said in that lawyer’s office.
“You didn’t think I was just some homeless guy.”
Ethan hadn’t.
He had seen Malcolm as a person before he knew anything else about him.
And somehow, that simple choice came back to him in a way neither of us could ever have imagined.
If you were Rebecca, would you have let Ethan give away all of his guitar savings, or would you have stepped in and limited how much he could give?
