The accidental confession changed the emotional temperature between them. Patrick later admitted he was nervous that Linda might tell him to pull himself together when they next spoke.
Instead, those three words opened the door they had both been approaching. They fell in love while living 1,300 miles apart, without yet knowing whether the extraordinary connection they felt through a screen would survive their first real moment together.

At first, they imagined waiting until the pandemic ended and finally meeting for dinner. As their feelings deepened, waiting another six or ten months became impossible.
Patrick climbed into his car in Oregon and began the enormous drive to Linda’s home in Colorado. The journey took approximately 23 hours and included three hours of sleep in a Walmart parking lot.

Even after driving through the night, the actor was determined to arrive looking presentable. Five minutes from Linda’s house, he pulled over, changed out of his comfortable khaki shorts, fixed his hair with bottled water, gargled, and added some cologne.
Then he drove the final stretch toward her driveway. It was there that Patrick kissed Linda for the first time. And then, the man who had crossed three states to find out whether their love was real never left.
