The Song Was Born on Her First Journey Toward Freedom
Dolly wrote “Light of a Clear Blue Morning” in 1976, during one of the most defining changes of her career. After leaving “The Porter Wagoner Show,” she was stepping out alone and claiming the creative independence she had long wanted.
In a revealing 2023 interview, Dolly named “New Harvest … First Gathering” as the album she had sacrificed the most to make. It was her first record after separating professionally from Porter Wagoner, and creating it allowed her to take fuller control of her music.
The future classic began forming almost immediately after that chapter closed. Dolly said she started writing it in the car while traveling home from Porter’s office on the day she left his show for good. “I wrote my ‘song of deliverance‘ the day I finally departed the show for good,” she recalled.
For Dolly, the clear morning represented the arrival of a new day. She had already written enormous hits such as “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” yet this album brought another kind of triumph: the knowledge that she had earned the right to make her own decisions.
“It was a very special time recording and I remember feeling so free — like I had been delivered,” she said.
She remained grateful to those who had helped her, but one belief sat at the center of both the song and the life she built afterward. Dolly believed she had been born to be free.
The eagle in her lyrics had felt captured but was finally eager for the sky. Fifty years later, those same words became the first ones her team placed before a world grieving her death.
