Chapter 1: My Son and I Secretly Got on My h007

e.

Apparently, he had been lying.

“There were times when I thought I had everything figured out,” Tyler continued. “A good career, a beautiful home, a  family. But sometimes, life brings someone into your world who changes everything.”

Mason squeezed my hand.

“Mom, who’s Vanessa?”

I swallowed hard.

“I’m not sure, sweetheart.”

It was the first lie I had ever told my son that I desperately wished were true.

A few passengers began applauding. Someone near the front let out an excited laugh, as though they were witnessing a romantic proposal.

Then Tyler said the words that made my stomach turn.

“Vanessa, if you’re listening, I want you to know that I’m done hiding how I feel about you. When we land, I want to begin the rest of my life with you.”

The applause grew louder.

Mason stopped smiling.

He looked at me, then down at the drawing in his lap.

“But Dad already has a family,” he whispered.

I couldn’t answer.

My husband was standing somewhere behind the cockpit door, making a public declaration of love to another woman while his seven-year-old son sat in the back of his airplane holding a picture he had drawn just for him.

I wanted to stand up. I wanted to march toward the front of the plane and demand that Tyler explain himself.

But Mason was watching me.

So I took a breath, forced my voice to remain steady, and said, “Let’s wait until we land, okay?”

He nodded, although his eyes had already filled with tears.

I reached for the drawing, hoping to fold it before he could look at it again.

Instead, he pulled it against his chest.

“I made this for him,” he whispered. “I thought he would be happy.”

That broke something inside me.

Not the announcement. Not Vanessa’s name. Not even the humiliation of realizing that strangers on this plane might know more about my husband’s secret life than I did.

It was the sight of my little boy trying to understand why his father had made room in his heart for another woman while apparently forgetting to mention the child who worshipped him.

I wrapped my arm around Mason and kissed the top of his head.

“You did nothing wrong,” I told him. “Do you understand? Nothing.”

He nodded against my shoulder.

The rest of the flight passed in a blur.

Tyler returned to his usual announcements, discussing turbulence and our estimated arrival time as though he hadn’t just turned our lives upside down.

I sat silently, holding Mason’s hand.

Then, about twenty minutes before landing, my phone vibrated.

A message from Tyler.

Tyler: I need you to do me a favor when we land.

I stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

Tyler: Don’t make a scene. There’s someone important on this flight, and I need this to go smoothly.

I read it twice.

He still had no idea we were there.

Or perhaps he did, and he simply didn’t care.

I typed a single question.

Me: Who is Vanessa to you?

The reply came almost immediately.

Tyler: This isn’t the time. Please trust me.

I nearly laughed.
