I started CPR. Every time I paused to check for breath, the dog’s head lifted to watch my hands. After the second cycle, the boy coughed. The dog tried to stand up, but his leg buckled.
Then the paramedics took over. We searched the boy’s pockets and found an emergency card: Noah Whitaker. His parents were already sprinting down the shore. Dana, his mom, hit the stretcher first. Marcus, his dad, followed, looking like he needed to grab onto something just to keep standing. They’d been less than two hundred yards away at a picnic when Noah slipped. The trees and the noise hid the whole thing.
But the dog saw it.
Part 2 — The Minutes Before the Splash
Noah Whitaker had gone to Lake Chickamauga with his parents and older sister for his cousin’s ninth birthday.
The picnic occupied four tables near a playground. Adults grilled hamburgers while children moved between the swings, grass, and a fenced section overlooking the lake.
