All the women my widowed father dated disappeared overnight – so I asked my friend to go out with him.

I arrived at Sabrina’s apartment by car before I had time to question myself.

She opened the door dressed in sportswear.

Her white sneakers were lying near the entrance.

When I showed him the security camera footage, his face went down.

“You followed Rachel,” I said.

Sabrina took a small step back.

“Lola, you don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

The gentleness disappeared from her expression.

“Your father was supposed to love your mother forever.”

“He did it.”

“No. He replaced her.”

“He spent 12 years alone.”

“And that’s what made romantic relationships acceptable?”

His voice rose with each word.
