A three-year-old housekeeper’s daughter painted all over my face while I pretended to sleep

Matteo and Elena entered behind me.

Isabella closed her eyes.

“Before you were born,” she said, “I had a daughter.”

No one spoke.

“Salvatore took her from me. He said she died.”

“Did she?”

“No.”

My mother looked at Elena.

“Elena is not Salvatore’s daughter.”

Elena froze.

“She is mine.”

The room tilted again.

“My daughter?” Isabella said through tears. “You are Adrian and Matteo’s older sister.”

Elena stumbled back.

“That’s impossible.”

“I recognized the birthmark behind your shoulder the day I saw you in the hospital.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Salvatore said he would kill Lily if I did.”

Elena looked sick.

Matteo leaned against the table.

The woman he had loved was not his half sister through Salvatore.

She was his full sister through Isabella.

The horror remained.

But Isabella continued.

“Matteo, you and Elena never had a physical relationship.”

Elena stared at her.

“What?”

“Salvatore drugged both of you and altered your memories. The doctors created photographs, messages, and records to make you believe you had been lovers. He wanted guilt to control you.”

Matteo gripped the table.

“So our love—”

“Was real,” Isabella said. “But he ensured it never crossed that line.”

Elena began to cry.

For years, both had carried shame for something that never happened.

Matteo took one step toward her, then stopped.

Elena crossed the distance herself and embraced him.

Not as lovers.

Not yet as siblings.

As two people who had survived the same lie.

Then Isabella revealed the final secret.

Lily’s embryo had not come from her egg.

It came from an anonymous donor chosen by Salvatore.

“Who?” I asked.

My mother looked toward Vincent.

He had entered silently.

His face was pale.

“My daughter,” he said.

No one moved.

Vincent explained that his wife and infant daughter had supposedly died in a hospital fire twenty-nine years ago. Salvatore had taken tissue from the child and preserved it as part of his genetic experiments.

“My daughter’s name was Sofia,” Vincent said. “Lily carries her DNA.”

That meant Lily was biologically mine and genetically connected to Vincent’s lost daughter.

The child had been built from stolen lives.

But she belonged to none of the men who designed her.

She belonged to herself.

A guard entered.

“Sir, Salvatore escaped during transport.”

The room went cold.

“How?”

“The convoy was attacked.”

Vincent looked at the clock.

“He is coming here.”

We moved Lily immediately.

But when Elena entered the bedroom, the window stood open.

The bed was empty.

Buttons lay on the floor.

Pinned to his chest was a note.

**BRING ISABELLA TO THE LAKE HOUSE. COME ALONE.**

My mother read it.

“This started with me.”

“No,” I said. “It ends with all of us.”

We traveled separately to the abandoned lake house where Salvatore had once taken us as children.

Snow covered the trees.

Inside, Lily sat at the dining table coloring calmly.

Salvatore stood behind her.

A wire ran from the explosive vest around his body to a trigger in his hand.

“Grandpa says everyone is playing a game,” Lily said.

I forced my voice to remain steady.

“He lies.”

Salvatore smiled.

“Children learn so quickly.”

Isabella stepped forward.

“You wanted me.”

“I wanted obedience.”

“You never understood love.”

“I understood that it makes people predictable.”

He looked at me.

“Adrian will surrender for the child. Matteo will surrender for Elena. Vincent will surrender for the memory of his daughter.”

Then he looked at Isabella.

“And you will surrender because you still believe there is something worth saving inside me.”

My mother’s eyes softened.

For one terrible second, I thought he was right.

She walked toward him.

“Isabella,” I warned.

She did not stop.

Salvatore smiled.

Then she embraced him.

His expression changed.

“You forgive me?”

“No,” she whispered.

She pulled the trigger hidden beneath her sleeve.

A small electromagnetic pulse device activated.

The detonator in Salvatore’s hand died.

Vincent fired.

The bullet struck Salvatore’s shoulder.

I crossed the room and tore Lily from the chair while Matteo tackled our father.

The explosive vest did not detonate.

Salvatore screamed as agents flooded the house.

This time, they placed him in chains strong enough for a king.

Lily touched my face.
